This beautiful Kenyan Auction lot comes to us by way of the Thunguri Coffee
processing factory which is located in Central Province, Kirinyaga District near
the town of Karatina. Established in 1987,the wet mill rests on a 7 acre piece of
land serving Gathundie, Gathiruini, Thunguri and Kaguyu Villages. Currently it
is affiliated to Kibirigwi Farmers Co-operative Society Ltd with membership
currently standing at 800 members, 775 of which are active farmers. The most
unique aspect of this factory is that it us also located within a tea growing zone
which its members are also very active in.
ManagementThunguri Coffee factory is a small operation run by Simon Mathenge who oversees
10 permanent and additional part time staff. Permanent staff members duties include
weighing coffee, selection and coffee grading and making sure farmers are paid on time
and complaints are addressed.
The number of part time staff varies from year to year
depending on the size of the crop harvest, but usually peaks at 14 during the peak harvest
season and drops to 2 during non harvest times.
