Coffee Information:

A chance meeting with Rena Paguagua at the 2013 Specialty Coffee Conference of America led us to this coffee. We had the opportunity to talk with Rena and hear the story of her father Don Rene's history in coffee and the many challenges he had growing his coffee farm. Don Rene's story is truly moving as he had to move his family from the country when Civil War arrived in 1979 and his farms and dry mill were seized by the government. Don Rene started anew over the border in Honduras growing a small farm of a few acres to over 100 acres. As the civil war wound down in Nicaragua in the late 80s, Don Rene returned to his homeland to start over once again. Starting a new coffee farm is a daunting task for anyone, but Don Rene was now in his seventies! With perseverance he laid the foundation for what is now a multi-generation effort that encompasses several farms and a dry mill that was returned to the Pagagua's after the war.

After hearing this incredible story and tasting the coffee we knew we wanted to visit and see firsthand and see if we could be a part of this incredible story. Last April my wife and I headed south to Nicaragua and spent several days on the farms and at the dry mill cupping countless samples of beautifully prepared Caturra and Pacamara varietals. We ended up purchasing several lots from Finca Los Congos which is a perennial contender in Cup of Excellence competitions. We are very excited to offer this coffee to you and share a little history of passion and the human spirit along the way!
