| Located in an environmentally sensitive area near Gunung Leuser National Park in the Gayo Highlands of the Aceh province of Sumatra, Indonesia, The Gayo Organic Coffee Farmers Association (PPKGO) is an organic Fair Trade coffee cooperative comprised of small scale farms which produce 100% certified organic, shade-grown coffee.
The ethnically diverse PPKGO cooperative membership, 20% of which are women, stands as a model for unity in a region that has endured persistant political conflict. Despite the ongoing turmoil, PPKGO has continued to export premium-quality Sumatran coffee.
PPKGO received their Fair Trade certification (FLO) in 2000 which have advanced sustainable agriculture and resource conservation in the region. Its members are offered training in cupping and organic certification requirements and the community at-large benefits from PPKGO initiatives to improve local roads, water supply and schools.
